Working Through Depression

There are times in life when depression can come on suddenly. You may not understand what is happening right away as your world turns upside down, within and outside of you. You feel removed and isolated from the normal flow of day-to-day living. The emptiness within can be devastating. The passion for life no longer exists. As a Spiritual Intuitive, I have discovered ways to work through depression, become empowered and access a strength within that was waiting to be revealed. Here are six ways to help you through the challenge of depression.

1. Accept what you are feeling as "real". It is not an imagined state of being but an illness that can be treated. Recognize that you are in trouble and suffering. I realized that my ongoing symptoms weren't normal for my personality and temperament. I felt as if I were swirling into an abyss that I couldn't lift myself out of. This severely impacted my mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being.

2. Confide in someone who will truly listen to you. This should be someone who can be fully trusted with what you share on the deepest level. In my case, my husband was actually a witness to what was happening with me. I could entrust him with my thoughts and knew he would "be there" for me, not matter what. Without question, he would provide much- needed daily support for the road ahead, no matter the many turns it would take to get me back on track.

3. Call your doctor to get the medical attention required. In addition to seeing a counselor, you may need to take medication also. This may be temporary or long-term, depending on your situation. I needed to see a counselor on a regular basis and was prescribed medicine at the same time. The combined treatment was most beneficial in my adjustment to understanding the depressed states I was experiencing and working to overcome this state of being.

4. Exploring an alternative means of healing can be most useful to complement the traditional medical route. You can also incorporate some self-healing methods too. I found that Reiki blended in beautifully with the counseling sessions and medicine in providing healing on another level.

5. Support groups are offered that you may wish to take advantage of. Make sure you are comfortable with the facilitator and those in the group. It is important that you feel safe and are in a healthy, positive atmosphere that is right for you. I was fortunate to attend a well- organized and supportive group. This helped me learn more about my depression and what others were going through. Tools were introduced that I could use each day toward my wellness. I was reminded of the importance to meditate daily and how to alter my thought patterns to the positive.

6. Allow yourself to go through the process. There are no short cuts. The road to recovery has many highs and lows. I decided not to fight the struggles but learn from them so I could stay open for what was ahead. Feeling and understanding each emotion was necessary for me as it was part of getting better. I realized I couldn't afford to waste my energy in putting up blocks along the way. I needed to conserve that energy for the positive as there wasn't much available within me to work with at that time.

Even though society has made great strides in recognizing and treating depression, it can still hold a stigma within the eyes of many. Know that it is not a sign of weakness. For me, it can actually become an experience of strength and inner growth. Having gone through several bouts of depression, I gained compassion for others going through the process as well. Over five years ago the last episode was the darkest and most debilitating. That made me face truths and seek help in the greatest effort I could muster to prevent this from happening again. No matter what anyone else thought, I was going to do what was right for me to overcome this condition. I recognized that this earthly plane can severely impact those who are most sensitive in nature and, many times, least understood. I came to believe in who I was and continue to be. This foundation is protected and continues to be guarded. I try to be aware of anyone or anything that may try to take away my inner power. This helps to keep me afloat in the current of life and drives my course forward.

Because of this experience, my life changed course suddenly and dramatically. My days are now filled with the promise of unveiling and sharing my life's passions. I now listen more and more to what my heart and soul are telling me. I am creating the space to allow the freedom to be myself as best as I know how in the present moment.

The fullness of life expands with each step we take. Wherever that leads us I believe a Divine presence walks with us to help us along the way. We must ask for that assistance and act upon the support we are given. Knowing that this unconditional love is always there provides a strength beyond our complete understanding. This is the source from which we can truly begin to heal.

Loss Of Appetite - Why It Occurs, What You Can Do

Every now and then a patient will come in for a check-up and I notice that they've lost weight. They tell me that they just really don't feel much like eating lately. The first thing I ask them, especially my older patients, is if they're depressed as depression is one of the leading causes of loss of appetite. However, a number of other things, both physical and mental, can lead to a appetite loss in people of all ages. Let me explain.

Causes of Appetite Loss

As I noted above, in some people, depression can cause a loss of appetite. They seem to just lose interest in everything they usually find enjoyable, including food. The clinical name for this is anhedonia or lack of interest in enjoyable things.

Grief and anxiety that occurs after the loss of a loved one, even a cherished pet, can be the reason some people have a temporary loss of appetite.

However, if grief and depression have been ruled out as the contributing factors, then I start looking for physical causes. These can include:

•Disease states - cancer, liver disease, kidney failure, chronic obstructive lung disease, heart failure, AIDS, heart failure, pregnancy.
•Medications - certain antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, pain medications.
•Street drugs - amphetamines, cocaine, heroin.
•Smoking - nicotine acts as an appetite depressant. In addition, the toxins in tobacco smoke can dull/alter taste buds so food doesn't taste good therefore you eat less. This is the reason people gain weight when they stop smoking.
•Chronic congestion - blocked sinuses from sinus infections, allergies, and viral illness like colds or flu can alter your sense of smell, which in turn alters your sense of taste.
•Dental problems - chewing may be causing discomfort with bad teeth or sensitive mouth tissues may take appetite away.
•Aging - slower metabolism, decrease in muscle mass, duller taste, may contribute to a decrease in appetite.

What You Can Do About It

If you are experiencing appetite loss to the point where you are losing weight continuously, you should contact your doctor for an evaluation. Here are some things your doctor will assess in order to treat you properly for it:

•How bad is it? - Are you able to eat at all? Or, do you eat only once a day? How much weight have you lost as a result?
•How long? - How long have you experienced it?
•Accompanying Event - Did it coincide with the loss of a loved one or some other upsetting, life-changing event? Events like this include divorce, loss of a job, loss of a home, sick parents or children, etc.
•Other Symptoms - are there other symptoms that accompany it, i.e., nausea, pain, difficulty eliminating, diarrhea, heart palpitations, loss of memory.

Tests

Your doctor may give you several tests to help diagnose the cause. These include:

•Abdominal ultrasound/upper GI - these tests look for abnormalities/problems within the abdomen and organs of the abdominal cavity (liver, kidneys, etc) that may be causing pain and/or nausea.
•Sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy - in some instances, food blockages in the intestinal tract can cause loss of appetite by putting pressure on the stomach.
•Kidney, liver function tests - out of whack range results for these tests may indicate reasons why you are feeling queasy, have abdominal discomfort, and not feel much like eating.
•Blood tests - a few vials of blood may be taken to evaluate for deficiencies.

Treatments

How your appetite loss is treated depends on what's causing it. Here are some common treatments for it corresponding to its cause:

•Disease - if an illness dampens your desire to eat, then your doctor may give you an appetite stimulant to make you feel like eating more while the condition is being treated.

•Depression - you may be given an antidepressant, which can stimulate appetite, to get you through this rough period in your life.
•Abdominal/dental pain/nausea - necessary tests should be done to determine/treat the underlying condition. After these symptoms are treated then appetite should resume to its normal level.
•Nutritional/Aging - sometimes a deficiency in the mineral zinc, especially in older people, can alter taste buds so that food just doesn't taste good. Supplementing with zinc can help bring back your desire for food.

Many people experience a period of loss of appetite throughout their life. It is usually nothing to worry about and is very short-lived depending on the underlying cause of it. When poor appetite lasts longer than several days to a week, perhaps accompanied by pain, frequent fatigue, changes in taste or sensory perception, that's the time you should visit your healthcare professional.

Depression - Physical Reasons For Developing Depression Explored

Do you know what the possible physical and environmental causes of depression may be? What are the symptoms to look out for in a person? This article touches on the subject of physical reasons for depression disorder.

Depression is generally defined as a serious medical illness that adversely affects your feelings, thoughts and actions. Desperate and fearful thoughts characterize the mind of a sufferer. There are a number of diverse symptoms associated with depression disorder. Here are a few to refresh your memory:

- Struggling to think with any clarity.
- Cannot seem to make decisions.
- Feeling worthless and insignificant.
- Irritable and restless.
- Lack of energy and action.
- Sleeping problems such as too much or too little sleep.
- Eating disorders resulting in weight gain or weight loss.

Depression has become more common during the past few decades. Approximately 10% of the general population are negatively influenced by it. Women are more frequently diagnosed with depression than men. The average age of onset seems to be from the teenage years to the mid-twenties. If untreated it may lead to thoughts of suicide and death as well as suicide attempts.

First, let us look at some emotional and social causes of sadness and brief periods of depression.

- Death of a friend or family member.
- Losing your job.
- Ending a relationship.

If handled correctly, these periods of sadness and adjustment after loss will get better and people can continue with their lives towards new jobs and relationships. Depression is different in that it becomes a chronic illness that requires treatment.

Let us now look at a few physical causes of depression.

- Childbirth may lead to postpartum depression due to hormonal changes as well as other less defined factors.
- Imbalances between the brain chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine might cause anxiety and depressive symptoms.
- Genetics may also play a role.
- Vitamin deficiencies can cause some of the symptoms.
- A medical condition such as heart disease or brain cancer may also cause depression.

It is important to rule out the potential physical reasons for depression before looking at the emotional causes for depression such as abuse, neglect and violence. A psychiatrist or physician can examine you and run some tests to rule out or confirm a physical reason for your depression disorder. Depression is viewed as a treatable illness. People may become better in varying degrees after seeking treatment. A psychiatrist can examine you physically as well as look at your history, culture and living environment. He may take all these different factors into account and then prescribe the most reasonable treatment. Possible treatment for depression may include medication and psychotherapy.

It is important to seek professional help if you are concerned about your own wellness or the health of a loved one. Depression is treatable and it is possible to cope with its challenges and problems if you have the right information and professional help.

Depression - Can Dolphins Relieve Depression Symptoms?

There are various treatments for depression but this one can be not only original, but also effective. Swimming with dolphins can be an effective therapy for depression according to a research carried out in Honduras. It was known that these animals had healing properties for other diseases but not alleviating depression.

Under support of biophilia theory, which shows how human health and well being are dependent on our relationships with the natural environment, the research showed that swimming with dolphins is an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression.

According to the British Medical Journal a randomised controlled study of animal facilitated therapy with dolphins in the treatment of depression.

The study was performed in Honduras with 30 patients diagnosed with mild or moderate depression. 50 per cent of them were assigned to the experimental group and the other 50 per cent to the control group.

Patients of the experimental group swam and snorkelled in the water with dolphins for one hour a day during a two-week period. Meanwhile, patients of the control group exercised the same water activities, but without dolphins, in order to control the influence of water and the natural setting.

Antidepressant drugs or psychotherapy were discontinued for all patients at least four weeks before the research and they were also not allowed to take drugs during the study. The average severity of the depressive symptoms was more reduced in the experimental group than in the control group.

The experts that led the study stated that effects caused by the animals were significantly greater than those of just the natural setting. They also explained that the emotions raised by the interaction with dolphins may explain the mammals' healing properties.

Participants from both groups reported lasting improvement and did not require treatment even three months after the study. Which This suggests that in patients with mild or moderate depression, using drugs or conventional psychotherapy may not be necessary when biophilic treatment with animals is used, they conclude.

Why You Need Life Insurance More Than Ever

Most people do not plan to buy life insurance until something happens or some sales agent approaches them. This is the sad tragedy that some people realize when their main provider unexpectedly dies. And most of these people almost always ask the question of how much does life insurance cost. The fact of the matter is it will not be the cost that they have to deal with right away. With the present financial and economic conditions here and abroad you need to purchase financial protection and security for your family and love ones should you unexpectedly die.

The first thing you have to determine is the type and the amount of coverage that you need. You can easily determine the amount of your policy coverage if you know what the types of insuring yourself are. You have to know first what type of insuring can best suit your needs and circumstances. Most coverage starts at low fifty thousands to millions of dollars. This is highly dependent on your circumstances and budget as well as your life style.

Choosing the type of policy coverage can sometimes be a little bit tricky. You need to choose from a variety of types and forms of getting insured. The main types are permanent and temporary type of insuring. The most commonly known or popular type is the one called term life insurance. Term life as the phrase suggest implies that the policy coverage will be for a specified period of time. You can choose between one to thirty year term policy coverage. You will only be covered for the specified period of time that is stipulated in the policy contract. This is the type is more commonly bought by people who are just starting a new family.

The other commonly purchase type of insuring is what is called whole life insurance. It is a permanent type of insuring yourself. This is more expensive compared to term life. But the advantage of this is the savings feature which has a cash accumulation value. It is more expensive but you will be covered for the rest of your life. And your premiums will never change as long you do not lapse in your premiums payments. You need to maintain the monthly payment and avoid missing any due payments to avoid any penalties or suspension or default.

Once you have chosen the type and the amount of policy coverage, you need to know how does doe it cost you for a certain amount of coverage. So the thing you can do now is to get life insurance quotes amongst the many life insurance companies and compare them. You need to make the comparison to assess and analyze which will best suit you needs and budget. The quotations that you may be getting are just estimates and they do not represent the final premiums that you will be paying. What it does is it will provide you with the heads up information as what are your probable premiums should you choose one of the quotes.

In uncertain financial and economic times, it is more than ever needed to get insured and protect your love ones, family and business. Uncertain economic and financial times can lead to stress and depression to some and to some may lead to fatal deaths. Your health is always affected by your financial circumstances and it goes bad people get sick. So it is best not to wait to get life insurance so your family and business is covered should something unexpected happens. Just make sure to purchase it from a reputable, highly rank and financially stable life insurance companies.

How to Find Unemployment Income Protection

In these uncertain times, we are all taking considerable measures to save more and spend less of our hard earned money. We are facing our fears and realizing that unemployment can become a reality for all of us. Financial experts tell us that, ideally, we should have enough money in savings to get through 6 months of unemployment. In actuality, there's probably not enough savings in our rainy day fund to get us through much more than a few weeks.

The Government Gives You Minimal Unemployment Income Protection

The Federal government instituted unemployment benefits during the great depression. However, the government will give you no greater than 50% of what your previous salary was, and there is a set maximum you are able to receive each week. It's unlikely that unemployment benefits will be enough to pay your bills-- let alone support the quality of life you're used to. You should also know that if you are self-employed and can't find work, you are not eligible for government unemployment benefits.

Insurance, Insurance, Insurance

There are several insurance policies you can sign up for that will give you unemployment income protection. The three policies you should seriously consider are income payment protection insurance, mortgage payment protection insurance, and loan payment protection insurance. All three types will support you through the stress of unemployment.

Unemployment Income Protection for Your Salary

You depend on your salary to pay your bills, buy food, keep your home, and put gas in your car. Income protection insurance will give you a monthly lump sum, tax free, to keep your quality of life intact. When taking out a policy, you determine the amount you will receive each month based on your salary. This is the broadest form of unemployment income protection as you decide where to put the money that comes in. It is also the most policy with the highest premiums. Should you become unemployed, you have a safety net of cash flow waiting to catch you.

Unemployment Income Protection for Your Mortgage

Your biggest monthly payment is likely to be your mortgage. If your home goes into default, not only do you have the anxiety of being unemployed, you and your family can soon face foreclosure. Unemployment mortgage protection insurance will pay your mortgage loan for a certain amount of time. This policy will safeguard the future in your home and give you time to get back on your feet and enter into the work force again.

Unemployment Income Protection for Your Loans

Unless you're an above average American, then you have several lines of revolving credit requiring a monthly payment. Loan protection insurance is designed to pay your monthly debt obligations in full. This policy will take care of the basics such as your school loans and car payment.

Getting Started

With all the forms of unemployment income protection available, you don't have to go a single month without the cash you need. Find an insurance agent online or locally to help you decide if this type of protection fits your needs and concerns. Do your research and get started finding the unemployment income protection that will meet your needs today!

You need to work more than part time, and self employed individuals and seasonal and temporary employees are not eligible for mortgage payment insurance. Companies may even consider how long one has been self employed as well.

You may want to consider this protection if the loss of your job would put your family in a hardship position. Consider the cost of the monthly premiums, the likelihood of losing your job, and the potential stress and financial difficulty that would come from difficulty in paying your home loan to decide if this protection is right for you. Take charge of your financial future and do your research to see if mortgage payment protection insurance is right for you!

• Run blood tests and other lab tests. These tests could be a large amount of test or possibly a few tests, based on your doctor. Anticipate a Hormone test and other test for example this to rule out any Thyroid matters that may result in your problems.

Bipolar Disorder and Mental Illness

A person suffering from manic depression demonstrates extremely excited impulsive behavior. The person is usually full of energy during the phase of mania. Unlike the usual ups and downs that a person goes through in the day-to-day life, this brain disorder is far more severe. In some cases, the sufferer might engage in risky or unhealthy behavior such as drug use, spending sprees, or impulsive and unprotected sex. A prolonged phase of manic depression might bring on feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities one normally enjoys. It is a life-long condition and requires long treatment. The treatment process involves the guidance of a therapist with medications and counseling sessions. With support and love from the family members and the right treatment from a good therapist, the treatment gets more effective.

Bipolar Disorder is not a mental disorder that is only prevalent among common people. A number of famous personalities with above average creativity and extra-ordinary skills are often seen to become preys to this disorder. Famous writers like Leo Tolstoy, Charles Dickens, Kenneth Graham; actors and actresses like Drew Carey, Jim Carrey, Marilyn Monroe, Kevin McDonald; Musicians and composers like Charles Ives, Anton Bruckner, Alexander Scriagbin, Charles Parker and Stephen Foster have been diagnosed with bipolar depression in their lifetime. It must have been difficult for all these popular men and women to cope with the symptoms of manic depression. But they have successfully overcome their problems and stood apart as supreme individuals. This gives us the hope and assurance that people with manic depression can be treated and they can live their lives successfully.

If you or any one you know is suffering from this severe form of mental illness then you should try to find a reliable therapist for treatment. You can also participate in a Bipolar Forum on numerous mental health service and therapy related websites. Paintings of Modern Art - The Scream

If any single painting exemplified the concepts of modernism, and how the philosophy influenced art, it's "The Scream" by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The painting, which depicts an agonized figure against a blood red sky. There are those that say that the painting depicts the hopelessness inherent in modernism. Others call "The Scream" a symbol of modern man overtaken by an attack of existential angst, the moment in which the existential crisis occurs.

As a matter of fact, some people believe that the painting depicts some kind of mental illness, supported by the fact that Munch's own sister was hospitalized with what was probably manic depression at the time. Others insist that the painting depicts some kind of dissociative disorder, in which there's a feeling of distortion of the environment and one's self.

There have been all kinds of attempts to explain different aspects of the painting. The red sky, for example, could've been inspired by the weather conditions in Oslo during the time that Munch created it. There was a powerful volcanic eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, and the ash that was ejected from the volcano left the sky tinted red in much of the eastern United States and most of Europe and Asia from the end of November 1883 to February 1884. Some scholars dispute this theory, however, stating that Munch wasn't a descriptive painter and tended to not depict things literally.

Another theory that advances the depiction of mental illness in this painting is the setting of the painting itself. The landscape in the background of "The Scream" is Osloford, viewed from the hill of Ekeberg, near what's now Oslo, Norway. The bridge the subject is standing on happens to be nearby both a slaughterhouse and a mental institution. Munch very well could've gotten some existential vibes from both buildings.

At any rate, "The Scream" seems to be one of those modernist paintings that have captured the public, to the point that by the late twentieth century, it held almost iconic stature. In 1983 and 1984, pop artist Andy Warhol created a series of silk prints of Munch's works, including "The Scream," making it into a mass-reproducible object. It's now one of the most recognizable pieces of art, and has been used in cartoons, movies, and advertisement.

Munch created at least four versions of "The Scream," held by various individuals and museums all over the world. Two of them have been stolen. The first was in 1994, from the National Gallery in Oslo, the same day as the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. The four thieves left a note to replace the painting they stole: "Thanks for the poor security." It was recovered in 1994 in a sting operation. Another version, along with another of Munch's paintings ("Madonna"), was stolen in 2004, from the Munch Museum in Oslo. It was damaged, but was able to be restored after the police recovered it after a huge investigation.

"The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is an important piece of modern art. Many believe that it has garnered so much attention because it depicts not only the spirit of modernism, both as a philosophy and an art movement, but the angst and detachment of the modern world.

Managing Depression With Food and Nutrition

While many health care workers are aware that there is a link between some physical illnesses and nutritional deficiencies, not many people are aware that mental disorders also have a nutrition link. Most believe that mental illnesses are strictly emotional and have no metabolic or biochemical association. Nutrition, however, may play a greater role in depression than is widely known. Some researchers believe that nutrition can play a key role, both in the onset, severity, and duration of depression, including daily mood swings.

Many of the same food patterns that come before depression are the same food patterns that occur during depression. These patterns may include skipping meals, poor appetite, and a desire for sweets. People who are rigid in their eating and follow very low carbohydrate diets also may be at risk for developing symptoms of depression, because the brain neurotransmitters (tryptophan and serotonin), that are involved in modulating depression are obtained from carbohydrate rich foods. Almost all anti-depressant drugs work by increasing the levels of these brain neurotransmitters.

Which foods affect mood and cause depression is not fully known but some individuals are more sensitive than others. In general, foods such as refined carbohydrates (simple sugars, chocolates) provide an immediate but temporary mood improvement. These foods have to be eaten continuously to sustain the mood elevation. This may not be practical and safe in the long run as one can easily gain weight and develop heart disease. Other options are to eat complex carbohydrates such as cereals, pasta, fruits and vegetables. Although, not as appetizing as chocolates, they are more likely to have a more prolonged mood elevating benefit.

Depression has long been known to be associated with deficiencies in neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline. The amino acids tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine and methionine are often helpful in treating depression. Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin and is usually converted to serotonin, inducing sleep and tranquility and in some cases restoring serotonin levels to diminish depression. Tyrosine is not an essential amino acid since tyrosine can be made from the amino acid phenylalanine. Tyrosine and possibly its precursor phenylalanine are converted into dopamine and norepinephrine. Methionine combines with ATP to make S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), which facilitates the manufacture of brain neurotransmitters.

As consumption of omega-3 fatty acids from fish and other sources has declined in most populations, the incidence of major depression has increased. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids containing 1.5 to 4 g of EPA per day should be sufficient for mood elevation in depressed patients. Though, high doses of omega-3 supplements may not be suitable for some patients such as those on anti-clotting drugs.

Other nutritional deficiencies can contribute to depression. Notably, vitamin B, folate and magnesium deficiencies have been linked to depression. It has been reported that rapid recovery from major depression is possible in less than 7 days by treating patients with 125-300 mg of magnesium (as glycinate and taurinate) with each meal and at bedtime.

5 Tips to Spot Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depressive illness and means that a patient can go from very high and upbeat moods to seriously down and depressed in a matter of minutes. It is a recurrent illness meaning that patients are likely to suffer it for the rest of their lives. Because of this treatment will need to be continued for long periods of time and a strong network of professionals, family members and friends is ideal to help the bipolar disorder sufferer. Spotting the symptoms of bipolar disorder can be difficult but it is fundamental; without noticing the symptoms you won't be able to get the help you need.

1- Manic episodes can be easy to spot and include an increase in energy and a euphoric mood. Obviously if a person has been depressed for any length of time and then suddenly shows these characteristics it is likely to be very evident and easily noticed. Other signs of mania can include an increased sex drive, a lack of concentration, spending sprees and many more.

2- Depression can be spotted quite easily too but can be overlooked as just being a down day. A sad or anxious mood that lasts for an extended period of time is the most obvious sign of depression and the first thing you should look for. Other signs include a loss of interest in things that would have previously caused excitement, including hobbies or sex.

3- Severe cases of either of the swings associated with bipolar disease can lead to symptoms of psychosis which can include hallucination and delusions. These should also be very easy to spot but it is unlikely that the sufferer themselves will do so.

4- A mixed bipolar state can sometimes occur that means the patient can suffer from both mania and depression simultaneously. Agitation, sleep deficiency, a change in appetite and other factors can indicate a mixed bipolar state. Patients with this type of bipolar disorder can be very depressed while still having high levels of energy.

5- morbid thoughts are the most worrying of symptoms and many people subconsciously ignore them in the hope they go away. However, if you suspect the patient is having morbid thoughts and contemplating suicide you should act immediately to prevent the worst from happening. If necessary call 911.

Clinical Depression - The Darkest Shade of Blue

As I lay down, I feel the cold breath of despair wash heavily over me. Sleep invites me towards it--a welcome escape from the noisy crowd in my head and the heavy weight pressing down on my chest and stomach. My body involuntarily curls up, taking on the characteristics of an unborn child, totally dependent on someone else to provide its every need. But I can feel my umbilical cord twisting and tangling. Life itself is draining from me. Perhaps I am already asleep and this is a dream. I desperately try to wake up, but the more I try the more I realise this is my reality. Now I must sleep to escape its cold, hard stare. My soul--shrivelling, dry, lifeless. My essence--vanishing. Disappearing inside myself. All that remains is a broken shell.

My first encounter with clinical depression was the most terrifying experience of my life. The term 'depression' is misleading to many, after all, we've all felt down, sad or 'depressed' at some stage and managed to get over it. How bad can it really be? In fact, mild depression bears very little resemblance to severe, clinical depression. In its most virulent form, depression is dark, terrifying, paralysing and potentially deadly. It's more than just feeling sad or blue. Clinical depression is the darkest possible shade of blue--the shade that teeters on the edge of total blackness.

According to the World Health Organisation, depression may soon be a major disabling illness worldwide. Around one in five women and one in eight men will personally experience depression at some stage in their lives. Even more disturbing is the fact that children are now increasingly diagnosed with depression. And it's estimated that up to one half of sufferers don't seek help.

Despite what is known about this condition, there is still a huge stigma attached. Not only is the sufferer ashamed of their condition, their shame is perpetuated by society's profound lack of understanding. Along with their shame, they often feel they are sinking into the quicksand of madness. And the fear of madness can be worse than the fear of death.

So where does this severe form of depression come from? There are no definite answers but there seem to be countless influences on depression, ranging from religious beliefs to weather changes. Some of us are genetically predisposed to depression with evidence showing that more than one half of a person's vulnerability is in their genes. A person with a sibling or parent with severe depression is more than twice at risk, with that risk increasing to about five times if that relative fell victim before the age of twenty.

There are certain life events that trigger around two thirds of depressive episodes. The other one third of episodes appear to come from nowhere.  No matter the risks or causes, no-one is immune.

It is, without doubt, an illness inconceivable by anyone who has not found themselves in its terrifying grip--a frightening and paralysing despair, bordering on madness. To many, suicide is the only escape; ultimate victory comes at a supreme price and a tragic loss to loved ones.

What is it like to find oneself in the depths of severe depression? Many, in their efforts to describe it in words, have found even their best attempts to be lacking. Throughout history, philosophers, writers and poets have attempted to portray the dark terrors of the most severe form of depression. They have found that the 'indescribable' can only be depicted through the metaphor. It was Winston Churchill's 'black dog'',Julia Kristeva's 'black sun', William Styron's 'darkness visible', and John Milton's 'cascading darkness'. Emily Dickinson's eloquent description of a depressive breakdown in I Felt a Funeral in my Brain is packed with metaphors. Marie Cardinal in her autobiographical novel, The Words to Say it, gives a poignantly honest and descriptive portrayal of her long struggle with clinical depression which she calls the 'Thing'. Then between the metaphors, writers carefully place the subtle gaps and silences, containing that which is ultimately inconceivable. There are no words to describe it, only concepts that come together to give the reader a glimpse of what it might be like.

The depressed desperately need to be understood, but to have personally experienced the suffering of depression is the only way to truly know and understand. The support of family and close friends is also vital but how do they help someone whose illness is inconceivable and whose behaviour is misunderstood?

The depressed person is already carrying an unimaginable weight of shame, guilt and self-condemnation. Their illness is neither of their choosing, nor is it their fault. It is a serious and almost inexplicable illness, often more frightening than death itself. Sufferers of depression need as much love and support as does a cancer sufferer. Please don't be hard on them. Avoid telling them to pick themselves up and get over it. To do that is paramount to telling an epileptic to take control during a fit.

The depressed need their loved ones to love them unconditionally and forgive them for their mistakes. The world of the depressed is dark and unimaginably terrifying, but even the tiniest flicker of light can guide them out of their world of darkness.

Add to your knowledge Stress Management Strategies

Do you believe that God put us here on this earth to stress?

So, what is stress? Stress according to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language is a mentally or emotionally disruptive or disquieting influence; distress.

You see, our minds react to information received about a situation from our senses. When the mind perceives a threat, it activates a response and equips the body to proceed with that course of action. It can occur in an instant, often before we are conscious of the threat. The mind shifts into gear to deal with the threat so that it may restore us back to our stress free state. If we believe that we do not have control of the situation then we may experience anxiety or panic attacks.

Depression is bound by the works of God. Depression is not happy

Understanding how to relax your mind can help add days to your life. Learn how to refocus your thoughts to that place of refuge when your thoughts come from a coward; it can and will bring peace to your situation. Recognize the power that you have over these mentally or emotionally disruptive or disquieting influences by allowing yourself time to meditate each day and make peace of mind your first priority. Regular exercise, meditation, progressive relaxation, deep breathing and yoga are excellent ways of managing stress in your life especially for those who are at high risk for heart irregularities.

Managing stress can help reduce the development of serious physical conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, stomach problems and even cancer. It can also help to overcome psychological issues such as clinical depression, anxiety and panic disorders.

In a recent article, I read where this person would make the sound of the ocean with their breath. Whenever they focused on their breath, it would calm them to make that deep, resonant whisper sound the way they were taught in yoga class. They would direct their breath at the back of their throat, and listen to the sound of the force and power of their own breathing, there inside their head. They went on to say however, that breathing will only get you so far.

There are many different ways of applying stress management strategies to your life and you will find that each person has their own special way of managing stress. For example, if you are experiencing mild stress, you can drink herbal tea. Some health food stores carry tea that provide herbal stress relief and you may be able to find them available in capsule form as well. Keep in mind however, it is best to consult a doctor before taking any herbal medication especially if you are taking prescription medicines for other ailments; there are some herbs that you should not drink or eat as they may cause a harmful interaction with each other. It has been noted that herbal remedies are more effective when you have a healthy diet, regular exercise and complete rest. And remember to smile. Smiling works wonders.

Depression - Supplemental Coverage

One of the most commonly diagnosed mental health issues in the world is depression, which affects almost everyone at some point in their lifetime. When it becomes more prolonged in duration or something that affects your ability to go about your daily life, then it becomes time to seek treatment. Some degree of treatment is covered in most health insurance plans, particularly with managed care plans. Yet there may be a higher out-of-pocket copay that you are responsible for in HMO's, for example, or any other more tightly managed plans.

Before signing up for any health insurance plan, then, it's a good idea to think about your family's history of depression. If one or more close family members have suffered from this disorder, then you may be at a greater risk to experience these symptoms yourself. There are certain life events that could make you more prone to periods of depression, but it could strike seemingly out of nowhere depending on the type of depression that you have. Typical treatment plans for this include but are not limited to medication, therapy, and physical therapy sessions. Sometimes you will have to visit several different professionals before finding one that is best suited to your needs.

At times, when a more extensive treatment plan is needed for depression, your regular insurance policy will not cover it. In those cases, a good idea for many is to look into supplemental coverage. That could include a policy that puts a greater emphasis on mental health care. These are specifically formulated to cover the cost of visits to a psychologist or psychotherapist, who can help you resolve any issues that are leading to the symptoms of this disorder in order to find relief that is more long-lasting than what you could receive from medications alone.

To get started with finding a policy that will help cover the costs of treatment for depression, you will want to first examine what your current insurance covers. If you find that there are gaps in the coverage, then your options are to either look for supplemental coverage to help fill these gaps, or switch over to a different type of plan. Comparing these options side by side with the help of a qualified professional is highly recommended, and can take the edge off of any symptoms. The peace of mind that is afforded by proper treatment is well worth the time and effort it takes to do a little bit of insurance research. How To Beat Depression By Yourself

From time to time, we all have our 'down' moments. The death of a loved one, a bad day at work, even a downpour can dampen our spirits, (pun intended!). But times like these are just flashes of depression, gone as quickly as they came.

They're challenges, if you like, which you learn how to deal with. The real problems start when this depressed state continues. This is when you may meet that most disturbing condition, Clinical Depression, and you must learn how to beat depression by yourself.

The biggest of these problems is the answer to the question; why are you depressed? Everything in your life may be going along swimmingly, until you're aware that you aren't quite feeling up to par.

You try your best to keep a positive outlook on life, but without much success. A sort of; 'what's the point?' attitude starts to take you over. Most unlike you, you think. I've always been so cheerful.

You try looking at the brighter side of life, but the more you look at the brighter side, the darker it seems to become! Now's the time to start thinking about what's been happening in your life. Anything been bothering you? Even a little thing? A few cross words with a colleague at work, perhaps? Something, however small, that you've been playing over and over in your mind?

Well, yes, there was that little altercation I had with Fred a few weeks ago. Really, there was no need for him to call me that. It did upset me at the time. And, although you're not fully aware of it, the subject still upsets you. I'm not saying it's taken over your life... yet. But you still brood on it, don't you?

It seems, too, that going hand in hand with feeling 'down,' you've been feeling tired, as well. And those dreams! They're so vivid, and one after the other. Fred and I haven't spoken since and of course it was his fault, anyway. But that can't be it. Perhaps I have a virus, or something. Ought to nip into the doctor, I suppose.

Now, my friend. Virus, no. Doctor, yes. Perhaps a bit of medication that'll take the edge off this depression you're suffering, for that's what it is.

Then, face the fact that you've been brooding about Fred's comments to you. Every time you have a spare moment, the tiff you had flashes into your mind.

Then, go on, admit it. Things that happened years ago start to race through your memory, especially the bad things, the things you'd sooner forget. But they're on parade again.

Then you find it difficult even to go to work, and the hobbies you once so much enjoyed no longer bring you any gratification. So now what?

You have what they call Clinical Depression. I hate to say this, but you dug the pit all by yourself, and now you must climb out of it. No, it isn't your fault. I didn't mean it that way. What you did was quite unconscious, but now's the time to very gently free yourself from the shackles of this wretched condition.

Another problem is that you're experiencing aches and pains that you've never had before. You can't simply stay and rely on medications. So, what's the alternative?

You'll hate me, I know, but you must start to move around a bit. When these unpleasant thoughts come into your mind, do your best to think of other things. Pleasant things, and do this while going for a short walk. No-one expects you to leap around in an aerobic frenzy, but start walking and make these walks a little longer each time.

While you're at it, try to take an interest in things around you. Anything to take your mind off those things that have been besieging it for so long.

Try fiddling with your hobbies again. At least pick up your fishing rod, or mess about in your workshop a bit. The main thing is to kick those black thoughts from your mind.

Gradually, you'll find that your dreams are lessening and that you're waking up feeling more refreshed. Keep at it. It'll take time, I know, but soon you'll start to feel better. You'll begin to take an interest in your hobbies again and in life generally.

All of a sudden, you'll realize you're back to your old self again. But never look back. Keep your mind focused on the here and now, and perhaps plan for the future

Cures and Varied Treatments For Treating Depression

Devoid of getting into all that chemistry, let's only say that a lot of things in our modern lifestyle lead to acid ash, or the byproducts of our metabolism leading to an acid condition instead of the more fascinating alkaline. Various things that create acid ash in our system include consuming any animal products (beef, fish, chicken, dairy, eggs), and then the consumption of coffee and caffeine cola's that we fancy in order to get sufficient acidity in our stomachs to tolerate these things. A lot of of us also struggle with the feelings of anxiety and fear, uncertainty, loneliness, struggle and other negatives. Even when we manage these things, they sometimes skulk in the background. I found lots of years ago from a naturopathic doctor whose specialty was environmental sensitivity that when someone has a panic or foreboding attack, invariably their system is in an acid state. Maybe a solution can be discovered naturally for a panic episode symptoms remedy.

This terrible breach of assurance of mind and spirit that causes us to feel separated and terrified doubtful as how to progress essentially can be assisted greatly, with some essential knowledge of the simplest way to recover the body's normal balance. Accept it or not we are designed to control as an alkaline battery a body that is alkaline runs more successfully than an acidic system. The body must be acid in specific areas such as the bowel, but the side-product of our food and sentiments should result in alkaline pee and saliva. Some drugstores carry pH testing kits or tape that will let us know whether the pH of our pee or spit is in the alkaline range of 6.3-7.3. PH means possible hydrogen and is an essentially a way to tell us where on a range of acid to alkaline a particular solution sits.

Doctors actually have diagnosed mood swings as a common symptom of depression. According to doctors, someone afflicted by manic depression may have these so-called manic 'periods' whereby sudden outbursts of euphoric and elevated mood swings may very well go through this for as long as not just a day, it can really go on for so long as one week, and even longer than that.

If you're suffering from prolonged unhappiness for quite a long time now, you should face these bouts of depression and get yourself diagnosed by a psychiatrist, there are doctors who can basically help you with your problem. There are basically plenty of signs of depression that depressed people may very well possess but they do not have to suffer from each one of them before you really help them get diagnosed and be treated for this sickness.Clear out unhelpful disturbing patterns together with infancy distress, stress, worry, loneliness, sadness, fear. There are lots of natural tools and practices to improve and inspire this development: massage, bodywork, counselling, chatting with friends and friends. Acquire what works for you and do it!

Essentially start by hauling yourself to your doctors and get yourself diagnosed by a reputable psychiatrist, one that'll basically help you with your depression concerns, answer all of the possible questions that you could have when it comes to depression as well as offer you the best available to depression treatment that'll make you give yourself some good-old, yet highly effective depression help.Variation of diet to alkaline predominantly vegan or vegetarian, replace caffeine and cola's with tea and water, abstain, relax, produce life-style habits with rhythm and consume reduced amounts with time between meals, rest fully at night with an empty belly for twelve hrs.

Another depression trigger is enormous changes is hormonal levels. By seeing the individual grow through such coarse patches, fundamentally not caring about anything or anyone anymore, it's highly likely that not only will depression effect one's relationship with one's self but with his or her friends too. Getting energetic in the outside, walk work up to ten thousand steps a day (5 miles), meditate, breathe, yoga, run, play, smile.

Depression treatment actually starts with the patient overtly acknowledging his or her illness, by just being truthful with one's self, it'll be a lot simpler not only for the doctor but for the patient most of all, to really cure depression and find an appropriate depression treatment for her or him.

In place of a person's bright disposition is nearly a person who hates his or herself, having no self esteem, attempting to isolate one's self from the world and fundamentally just not caring about living any more.

Each time a person feels so guilty over something that basically makes one a very sad person who feels like she or he doesn't should be happy. Fortunately depression can now be cured, especially when diagnosed early, depressed individuals can really be treated through care and depression medicine, although it may be a bit costly, a person's good psychological fitness is something that should not be scrimped on.

Before starting with depression medication, the depression patient must first get him or herself to a reputable doctor, get a diagnosis of which type of depression the patient is really afflicted with, may it be clinical depression, manic depression or what-have-you.

Also, people who suffer from manic depression must always be in a position to see their specialists on a consistent basis in order to be ready to release their stored up feelings to someone who can translate and understand what they are going through far better in comparison to "normal" people.

Constant visits to a cognitive behavior therapist is an absolute must as well as taking all of the prescribed medicines that the doctor will ask the patient to take none of these exactly come inexpensive, but the amount of suffering that a individual is going through because of depression is enough reason already for others to begin to take notice and face depression head on.

Arthritis Cure - Dealing With Depression and Osteoarthritis

Depression is a most common side effect of osteoarthritis. This occurs when you start out healthy, being able to do things for yourself, but overtime you are less able to take care of yourself as the pains get worse. Research has shown that up to twenty percent of people with osteoarthritis are depressed at any given time, a percentage consistent with that found in other people with chronic diseases.

If osteoarthritis has left you depressed, there are a number of things you can do in addition to the arthritis treatment you get from your doctor.

1 Psychotherapy
This is often referred to as the 'talking cure', and it is used to treat mild episodes of depression.

2 Drug Therapy
This is the use of drugs to improve the symptoms of depression. The class of drugs used for this purpose is called antidepressants. It is advisable to consult your doctor before taking any antidepressant because medicines used in treating depression sometimes have different side effects.

Psychotherapy and drug therapy are mostly combined to treat arthritis patients with depression, and this combined approach has advantages.
It reestablishes normal body patterns more quickly
It helps to ensure compliance in taking medication
It recognizes the dual influence of biology and environment.

3 Learn to cope with your condition
Research has shown that those who cope best with any disease are less likely to develop depression, that is, those who deal with their osteoarthritis are less likely to sink into depression. Be proactive at solving your problem, and try to be as flexible with your daily activities as possible. Be ready to modify your lifestyle in a positive way, thereby winning the battle over depression.

4 Get Social Support
It is advisable for you to join a support group where you can find sympathetic ears and get some advice on coping with your condition.

5 Learn to Relax
Always find a way to cool off and reduce your stress. The best defense against stress is a positive attitude.

Stress itself may not cause depression but can make it worse. It signals certain glands to release high-voltage chemicals that can 'shock' the body and weaken the immune system, making your osteoarthritis symptoms seem worse while increasing your risk of getting some other disease.

Do anything you can to relax and shake off the stress- listening to music, meditating, or taking up a hobby. Getting enough sleep is also essential to reducing stress.

6 Touch Therapy
Research has shown that touch can reduce psychological stress associated with arthritis. And only a very soft touch is required as bear hugs may be too much for many osteoarthritis sufferers. A gentle, loving touch can be very beneficial in fighting arthritis.

Stained Glass Windows - A Light Unto the Soul

Light is truly the inspiration for stained glass in both the physical and literal feelings. During the Gothic Era from about 1150 - 1500 A.D. there was no electricity so alternate ways of lighting Cathedrals was necessary. Immense and elegant stained glass windows were created and intended to provide physical light by allowing in much needed sunlight, but they were also meant to provide spiritual light. The King James Version of the Bible in John 8:12 says "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light around the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the night, but shall have the light of life." Jesus was the inspiration for and his life, gruesome death and subsequent resurrection were the subject of nearly all of stained glass windows made during that period in history.

Grand and magnificent cathedrals carved up gigantic stones and supported by immense pillars and flying buttresses reaching up towards the Heavens in worship of God and His son were crowned with pleasurable jewels known as stained glass. In a few Cathedrals, stained glass planks covered entire walls and the nourishing pillars go almost entirely unnoticed. The pillars alone couldn't have supported the weight of the structure, which is the aim of the flying buttresses (they braced the structure from the outside).

The skill of making stained glass has been poetically brought up as "painting with light" taking the analogy even further. This term was coined owing to the belief that as opposed to reflecting light off of it, a stained glass window pane allows light to be transmitted through it. It is a unique partnership, as neither the light nor the window is as magnificent without the other.

Abbot Suger of the Cathedral at St. Denis in France was among the first one to employ the Gothic type of architecture in a shot to glorify God and Jesus Christ. The next quote is learned a writing of Suger, included as a piece of a transcription on the thresholds to the Cathedral. That gives insight into his motivations for using large amounts of stained glass and the relationship of the physical light to the spiritual, "...The noble work is bright, but, being nobly bright, the effort should brighten the minds, allowing them to travel through the lights to the true light, where Christ is the true threshold."

He later gave a detailed explanation as to what the aim of the exemplary works of stained glass window art were in the church; "Thus occasionally when, as a consequence of my relish the beauty of the home of God, the multicolor loveliness of the gems has called me faraway from outside cares, and worthy meditation, transporting me from material to immaterial things, has persuaded me to look at the number of holy virtues, then I seem to observe myself existing on some level, as it were, beyond our earthly one, neither completely in the slime of earth nor completely in the purity of heaven.

By the gift of God I am in a position to be transported in an anagogical manner from this inferior level to that superior one." Walking into a mighty cathedral like St. Denis, even today, one can feel the influence this passion for light had on the growth of the art of stained glass making and the worship of God during the Gothic Era.

Depression in Men: Myths Vs Truth

Depression in men occurs less often than depression in women, but it still affects a great portion of the country. Once thought to be a "women's disease," depression actually affects around 6 million men every year in the United States alone. Many experts also feel that those numbers are still too low thanks in part to the large population of men with depression that go undiagnosed every day. Whether they deny their symptoms or don't fully understand them, depression is a very serious illness that can be quite devastating to one's life without treatment. Since May is National Depression Month, we saw it fit to debunk some well-known myths and misconceptions about depression in men.

Myth # 1: Depression in Men Looks the Same as Depression in Women
If you have depression, then regardless of gender you're just really sad for extended periods of time, right? This is a big misconception about depression. While it absolutely affects both sexes and can cause serious disruption in their daily lives, the way men and women express their symptoms of depression is actually very different. While it's fairly well-known that depression in women can cause feelings of sadness and worthlessness, depression in men is actually more likely to cause sufferers to be irritable, aggressive or hostile.

Myth # 2: He Seems So Happy, He's Not Depressed!
If only if were that simple. Someone can seem to be as jovial and happy on the outside as a kid on their birthday, but that in no way means that they're not suffering from severe clinical depression on the inside. We have to remember that on average, depression affects one out of every 10 people in America and the majority of them continue on with their daily activities all the while suffering silently. Depression in men, especially when left untreated, can get so bad that they become unable to function, but most are much harder to identify from the outside.

Myth # 3: People with Depression Can Just Snap Out of It
This is a myth that is due to the extreme lack of understanding the general population has about the mental illness of depression as a whole. If a loved one suffers from clinical depression, as bad as they might want to, they can't just snap out of it or suck it up. Depression in men is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and there is no snapping out of that without treatment. Would you expect someone with diabetes to just snap out of it? No, you probably wouldn't and shouldn't for someone with depression either.

Myth # 4: Wealthy People Can't Get Depression
If you were fortunate enough to be born into money or have a high paying job, then you must not be able to suffer from depression as you have everything you need, right? Again, a giant misconception. Depression is a mental disorder that crosses all socio-economic bridges and boundaries. There is no gender, nationality, educational background or amount of wealth to shield you from the possibility of depression.

Depression in men is a serious, but treatable condition that should not be taken lightly. Untreated depression in men has been known to cause reckless and dangerous behavior like substance abuse.

Adrenal Fatigue - Top 5 Facts

Adrenal fatigue is a medical expression related to a compilation of imprecise symptoms including fatigue, inability to sleep, anxiety or nervousness, body aches, feeling run down, depression and digestive problems. Adrenal glands are endocrine glands that are located directly above the kidneys were specific hormones are secreted to help the body deal with daily life events and activities. When these adrenal glands do not function the way they are supposed to, a series of symptoms can occur giving way to a syndrome known as Adrenal Fatigue. Signals can include depression, weight loss, low blood pressure, body aches, fatigue, anxiety, and loss of body hair, nervousness and insomnia. Blood tests can be performed by a doctor to determine the exact function of the adrenal glands.?

There are a series of medical belief systems that claim adrenal insufficiency is caused by high levels of chronic stress. The theory, while unproven at this point, is that adrenal fatigue is caused by stress and the inability for the adrenal glands to keep up with the demands of continues high levels of stress and tension. While blood tests cannot conclusively detect the total adrenal activity because they are not sensitive enough to detect adrenal function; however, the body is and that is where the plethora of symptoms come from. The body's reaction to the lowered adrenal function spurs the body to respond with body aches, headaches, nervousness, fatigue, insomnia and other unspecified symptoms.

While there is still much to learn and understand about Adrenal Fatigue, there are certain facts that can be displayed and discussed in order to better understand the toll and stress this challenge can cause to the human body. The top 5 facts relating to Adrenal Fatigue are as follows:

• Anyone can experience symptoms. Because we all experience stress and strained situations during one point in life or another, anyone is susceptible to adrenal dysfunction. A high crisis situation, a death in the family, stressful deadlines at work or at school, problems within a relationship or between children and parents; all of these situations have the ability to create stress and tension, resulting in the inability for the adrenal glands to produce their hormones needed to deal with the elevated stress levels within the body. No one is exempt from adrenal dysfunction; therefore, anyone can suffer from this issue.

• Adrenal Fatigue has a list of common symptoms associated with the adrenal gland inability to properly produce enough hormones. These symptoms include: Loss of Stamina, extreme fatigue, insomnia, prolonger exhaustion, weight gain or weight loss, dizziness or feeling light-headed, lower blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure, decrease sex drive, inability to heal properly from common infections such as a head cold, the flu, bronchial infections, and other respiratory illnesses; increased anxiety, depression, the desire to eat foods higher in sugar, or caffeine, the inability to concentrate, cloudy short term memory, and depression. While this list of symptoms is not all-inclusive, these are the most notable and common indications of Adrenal Fatigue. One should make an appointment with their physician if they suffer from three or more of these symptoms and discuss the prospect of this issue.

• Adrenal Fatigue is treatable. Visit with your doctor about treatment options and what is available and suitable for you and your specific condition.

• Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome was coined in 1998 by Dr. James L Wilson. He coined the term for individuals who suffered from decreased adrenal gland function who suffered from the before mentioned symptoms. The concept of Adrenal Fatigue is relatively new, but there are a plethora of treatment options available.

• There are a variety of supplements available over-the-counter. There adrenal supplements can help increase the body's ability to produce Cortisol which can help overcome this syndrome. Visit with your doctor before taking these supplements to see which one is right for you.

The Winter Baby Syndrome

Social studies have shown that often children born in winter months test more poorly, often don't excel in School, and often earn less when they become adults. This mysterious social syndrome has for generation's mystified researchers, and parents alike.

Could it be children born in the worse months in a colder climate have a natural social disadvantage, or is their more to this phenomenon then we think?

Often researchers tend to discover things by accident,. or by trial or error. Recent studies have shown that perhaps modern "Winter babies" are actually born in more disadvantaged families. More single Mothers tend to give birth in the winter months, then the summer months.

The School year may also make a difference, children born during the winter tend to be at school with younger siblings- older children who mix with younger children tend to be more immature, sociologists claim.

Another reason may be that that as "winter" children grow up, they spend their initial years in an inactive environment. Cold winters mean more time at home, were "summer" children tend to be spend their early years outdoors.

In Nordic countries were winters can be long and harsh, there is no evidence that the Countries themselves fail to achieve. Many Nordic Countries have a more modern social network, and a higher standard of living then other more developed Countries.

However, researchers do show the lack of light can create depression, and light therapy is becoming a common practice to offset the effects of depression in winter. Could Babies at an early age could have more chance to become depressed?.

Other theories include one theory that "winter" babies tend to lack vitamin D, because children born in the winter, tend to have sunshine then their summer counterparts.

Still there is no one theory that has answered the question, "Why so many Winter Babies, are less successful then summer babies," but awareness of this may bring solutions that can help create more successful babies, who are born in the coldest months of the year.

Cars From the 30s

When you think of cars from the 30s you would be forgiven for thinking 'slow and ugly'. However, in many cases you would be wrong. In fact, many cars during the 1930s were equipped with heaters and radios - not as old, or as technologically challenged as you may have thought! This article has been created to share the joy and magnificence of cars from the 30s.

The Need for Speed

Despite the fact the decade of the 1930s was almost a century ago, there were cars capable of reaching incredible speeds of up to 270 mph [1]! With a horsepower of 736, this incredible car was a Mercedes-Benz race car driven by (now legend) Rudolf Caracciola. Who could have imagined a car would be able to hit 270 mph in the 1930s?

Got the Power

In the modern world cars have developed to such a degree where people love them for completely different reasons; whether it's the way they look, who they are made by, their top speed or the overall power of the car.

In the 1930s Ford set the standards for performance and efficiency with the introduction of the flathead V8 engine into mainstream vehicles. However, the big step was taken by Cadillac with their V-16 that was launched in January 1930 - the industry's first production car to offer an amazing sixteen-cylinder engine that was in high demand from people who could afford it! Imagine the car insurance quotes people were getting back then!

Technology

You don't usually associate 1930s cars with the word 'technology', but it's true that by the end of this incredible decade for cars the majority of what you see in your shiny new car today was around in some form back then. Below are just a few of the things you could expect (or ask for) in your 1930s car:

• Independent front suspension - The Lancia Lambda 9th series was built in 1931, and only 500 were available. [2]
• Tempered Glass (or toughened glass) - the late 30s saw the introduction of tempered glass, a huge leap forward for the industry.
• Radio - Developed in 1929, the radio quickly became a hit in the 30s and was in almost every car.

Style

The majority of cars in the 20's and early 30s were based upon the Austin Seven - a simple box saloon. However, as the Great Depression began, integrated fenders and fully-closed bodies were the best sellers, with some cars even having a boot at the rear for extra storage.

The Great Depression resulted in many auto manufacturers going out of business quite quickly, but the ones who were left grew and began to really change the design of automobiles post-war.
From the incredibly quick Mercedes-Benz and the staple-car of the early 20th Century - the Austin 7 - to the Ferrari's and Lamborghini's we have today, cars will continue to fascinate humans from all over the world because of their design, power and speed.

Depression and Substance Abuse

Depression coupled with substance abuse is called 'dual diagnosis'. Research has established that nearly half of the people addicted to alcohol or/and drugs have an overlapping mental disorder. Depression, drugs and alcohol are coherently related. Some people might resort to drugs and alcohol to seek relief from depression (called self-medication) while others might contract depression as a result of substance abuse. It is like a vicious circle and it can get extremely arduous to break away from it.

In most simple terms depression occurs when the brain produces less serotonin and norepinephrine, alcohol further reduces these chemicals, hence a person suffering from depression should stay away from it. Once the intoxication fades away you will be left feeling all the more blue and depressed. Alcohol literally boosts the depression symptoms increasing both their recurrence and asperity. About 40% people who drink heavily have this mental disorder. Depressed people my briefly experience exhilaration however it's soon replaced by irritability, fatigue, disarray and they may even pass-out totally oblivious of their surroundings.

Just like alcohol, drugs can be used as a form of self medication. Depression can set in because of the addiction or as a withdrawal symptom when a person tries to rid himself of the menace. Vice versa, an addict can get depression as one of the many adverse effects that drugs have. Drug addiction often leads to a lot of distress, one is likely to have trouble with law and in relationships, hence an addict aggravates his depression by isolating himself from the society. Also, a lot of money goes into supporting an addiction, so more often than not a person gets into huge financial losses.

Depression is curable in all forms even when a person indulges in substance abuse. It just gets a little more difficult as an addict has to cope with both the withdrawal symptoms and his mental condition. It is imperative to seek help from quarters let your loved ones know of your problems and ask for their support, visit a doctor and give him a complete account of your addiction and depression symptoms. Many support groups also help people fight both these problems, join them. Most importantly resolve to give yourself a better life devoid of substance abuse and depression.

Unforgivable Sin and Mental Illness - How Do I Know If I Have Committed the Unforgivable Sin?

As a Professional Counselor and an active Christian, I have often met clients who come to me ashen faced and trembling because they have believed that they have committed the unpardonable sin. That is, Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. I talk to them from my own experience of which I have recorded in a book for those folk to find for themselves that such an offense can only be committed when you die. There are many recorded people in the past who have died cursing Jesus Christ and His Sacrifice. That my dear friends is the unforgivable sin. You have died breathing your last breath cursing the only redeeming name that can ever save your soul. Jesus. Upon death, you can't turn around and ask for forgiveness because your will and your breath have gone, long gone.

God is a loving God. He is always willing to hear a repentant heart. Many a cursing man or woman has received forgiveness at the Cross simply by acknowledging their sin and allowing God to forgive and let them move on in life. Many wonderful Hymns have been written from that craggy place on their knees speaking of that 'once I was blind and now I see' place. of such hymn writers as John Newton and his wonderful hymn " Amazing Grace". He (Newton) went on to give God all the Glory through his writings.

Think about the cursing of Philosopher Voltaire who declared that the Bible would no longer be on the earth within 100 years of his death, yet his house where he lay on his deathbed cursing the Name of Jesus Christ, went on to become a publishing house for Bibles!. He died in a state of unforgiveness. Once dead, he had no more will of his own nor breath to renounce his cursing and to ask for God's forgiveness. You see you must confess your sins with your own breath and tongue, BEFORE you die. Otherwise your will is not your own once you die.

What a tragic experience it is to attend an unbeliever's funeral at the crematorium, where the funeral director states in a bold voice, "....so and so..............did not believe in a God and did not want any religious recognition of such an entity."

I am not interested in the theological technicalities. All that I am interested in is the nature of God. What is His nature? Is He loving and nurturing or is he as the song states " From a distance the world looks like its in harmony ending with the lyrics, God is watching us from a distance " written by Julie Gold and sung by Bette Middler. Is He really at a distance? or is He tangible within our hearts to feel? God understands our hearts. He is always willing to let us turn a new leaf and start again. Look at the wonderful hymns that John Newton wrote that we still sing today with a lump in our throat. How tragic if God had assigned a life of doom and damnation for Newton if, he never allowed such sinful behaviour ( his drunkeness and cursing life) to be washed away and forgiven. The world would surely have been robbed of the glorious words of forgiveness from a broken heart. see below for the words of Amazing Grace by John Newton.

Yes, it is a most serious offence to Curse the Name and Workings of Jesus Christ through the works which he wrought only by the power of the Holy Spirit. Yet, God, all merciful, just wants to pick up every cursing tongue and wash it with His love and set it back in place to show His glory. It is the devil who perpetuates the guilt and belief that once even a thought crosses into your mind that you have committed such an offence. Do you really think that the devil can't cross over into your thoughts? Well, he excels at that. He specialises in mind control. That is his entire purpose in eternity. To bring down the believer or unbeliever to a place of damnation to follow him there. The human mind is the devil's play ground. Ever wonder why there are so many Mary Magdalene's 're-incarnated' in a mental hospital or why every one curses in the name of Jesus, but not Allah? Think of the devil as being an immature bully. You wake at night in a cold sweat thinking that you have thought the unpardonable sin. Who put that thought there in the first place? Did you? Did you really go to bed that night with the aim of committing the unpardonable? So, where do you think that thought came from? YOU? Hardly likely. The devil just hovers around you, waiting for your most vulnerable time to hit. If you have been involved in seances and the like, such as contact with the dead, where do you think that force came from to lift objects or move the glass on the Ouija board? YOU? Don't kid yourself please!

The same force that came to the seance and told you about your grandfather or whoever and made it look so convincing is the same force that will come to you and whisper evil thoughts such as the unforgivable sin into your head and convince you that it is YOUR thought. Why do I know this?Because I was also a victim of his sick game. I also nearly ended up in a mental hospital due to the sleepless nights of anguish and screams in my head. I know that YOU can get over this with a lot of love, prayer and care. You need support from fellow Christians and Christian counsellors who have walked the walk. You can get over the diagnosis of mental illness - schizophrenia, manic depression, depression, etc and raise yourself up with God's grace and His mighty Holy Spirit. If you are still breathing now, say this prayer- " Father, forgive me, I have believed a LIE. It was not my thoughts, but thoughts impressed upon me by the devil. I ask you to forgive me where I have left doors open and show me now, by Your Holy Spirit, how to come out of this negative place of damnation to be myself. I was created by You and for You. If I am Yours, then you do not want to destroy Your own creation. You excel and love to see your creation grow and show You off, not hover in a wild depressed state of highs and lows. I know that You love me. You sent Your own Son, Jesus Christ to die for me, if I were the only person on this earth, You would still have sent Jesus to make a way for me to get back to You. I invite Jesus into my heart now and thank-YOU for Your love and forgiveness of my stupid thoughts which I I have allowed to grow in my head, I ask for your forgiveness of my allowing this to grow. That is the sin which I am guilty of. I believed a LIE. Thank-you Jesus and I welcome the Holy Spirit into my heart now. Welcome Holy Spirit." AMEN.

You are now forgiven and a Child of God. Don't you ever forget that. Next time the thought comes into your head, Discard it by simply praying, " The Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, which was shed for my sins at Calvary, covers and protects me from the evil plans of the devil by robbing me of my rightful joy in life with Jesus Christ. I am set free through the Shedding of the Blood of Jesus and my life is now mine shared in glory with Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. I believe in the Trinity of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. They are ONE. Jesus is the same Yesterday, Today and Forever." AMEN.

AMAZING GRACE - John Newton

Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev'd;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ'd!
Thro' many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promis'd good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be forever mine.
