The Depressed Man - Is a Testosterone Deficiency the Cause of His Depression?

Testosterone deficiency is one of the undiagnosed causes for depression in men.

Testosterone is known as the 'male' hormone, the hormone that gives assertiveness, sex drive, and mental and physical energy. It also helps maintain muscle and bone growth. When there's a testosterone deficiency not enough testosterone is produced to meet the body's needs. It's common to hear people joke about men with 'too much testosterone' as being over aggressive and assertive. And while too much testosterone can be a problem, low testosterone also brings along issues. These issues are both physical and mental.

Testosterone deficiency symptoms include increased body fat (obesity), decreased muscle mass and strength, erectile dysfunction and lowered sex drive. Another major sign of this hormone deficiency includes psychological changes including depression, fatigue, reduced assertiveness, poor memory and lowered self-esteem.

Recent scientific studies reveal that men with depression are nearly three times more likely to have low testosterone levels than men without depression. In addition, aging men with low testosterone levels are five times more likely to have symptoms of depression than men with normal testosterone.

The following questionnaire can be used as a screening tool for a testosterone deficiency.

  1. Do you have a lack of energy?

  2. Do you have a decrease in strength, endurance, or both?

  3. Do you have loss in height?

  4. Have you noticed a decrease in enjoyment in life?

  5. Are you sad, grumpy, and/or irritable?

  6. Have you noticed a recent deterioration in your ability to play sports?

  7. Are you falling asleep after dinner?

  8. Has there been a recent deterioration in your work performance?

  9. Do you have a decrease in libido?

  10. Are your erections less strong?

If you answer yes to more than half of these questions, then it may indicate that your testosterone levels are low.

As men go through the natural aging process they experience a decrease in testosterone at a rate of ten percent, per decade from the age of thirty. It has been shown that thirty percent of men after the age of fifty-five have a testosterone deficiency.

Because these hormone levels decline with age, it is often misinterpreted that the symptoms of a testosterone deficiency i.e. "depression, muscle loss, memory loss, lower sex drive", are just a normal part of the aging process. And although it is part of the aging process, you simply don't have to put up with the associated negative feelings and physical symptoms. A testosterone deficiency can be easily treated with testosterone medications. Injections, pellets and creams are available by prescription.

How Depression Effects Learning Disabilities

Depression and learning disabilities are frequently misunderstood. Learning disabilities and depression are common mental illnesses that affect millions everyday.

Studies has shown that children suffering with learning disabilities have complexity learning to speak fluently, take care of their health and bodies, and often suffer with the inability to cope with stress and the common pressures of everyday living.

A lot of the patients that suffer depression and learning disabilities are claimed to be borderline retards. Depression is related to emotional scaring, childhood traumas, chemical imbalances, insufficient nutrition's, and other factors, so therefore it makes sense that it is believed a form of retard ness.

Learning disabilities are often stemmed from lack of education, positive influences, and miscommunications. Often people that suffer from depression and learning disabilities are overwhelmed, and this too creates a problem for the patients.

If you notice anyone around you that is suffering from symptoms of depression and learning disabilities, such as lack of enthusiasms while playing, unhappiness, feelings of despair, suicidal tendencies, and negative thinking then you should immediately contact a professional to avoid risks.

Depression is serious mental health disorder and it should not be taken lightly. Often people that suffer depression or learning disabilities use alcohol and/or drugs as a source for relief. This only creates a bigger problem, and help is needed immediately.

Depression also causes fatigue, lack of interest, and behaviors that could lead to criminal prosecution. Many people that suffer depression are affected by common problems, such as debts, deaths in the family, and so on. They often have the inability to cope with stressors, and often need support as a result.

Doctors often treat such patients with medications, including Prozac, however, recent studies has proven that the many medications used for treating depression and learning abilities have side affects that complicate the diagnose.

It is recently been discovered that depression may be linked to propensity for perception after the fact, for immersion in the mind's eye, a normal accompanying friend to the restraint, if not antisocial, depressive irritation. I beg to differ with this philosophy, since most encounters I've come across with patients that suffer depression and learning abilities, they often strive for attention.

This is a complete contradiction of antisocial, since antisocial is a diagnosis where the patient refuses to associate in society. Commonly depressive maniacs, or handicaps that include depression and learning abilities they often strive to find the answers to their suffering, yet neglect to see the answers when it is in front of them.

The mind is a tricky thing, and when someone tells someone that his or her emotions are not real, it is only denying the true problem. It is important to recognize the problem, without promoting a label on the patient.

Regardless of the many philosophies available to us, one being that when a person is labeled they are often sees as a label by counselors, and other individuals. The key to eliminating any problem is learning to accept your disability. Once you accept and recognize the problem, in my experience it has proven successful in treating the diagnosis.

The problem then is not necessarily on the diagnose itself, rather it is on the many professionals, patients, and others that refuse to accept that the problem exists. Instead of examining the mind, it is also important to examine the diagnosis closely and pay thorough attention to the symptoms.

Once you start dealing with each individual symptom separately, you can then work through the other problems gradually. The problem many times is professionals want to turn to medication verses treating the patients with effective therapy.

Let's look at a medicine that is given to patients with schizophrenia, antipsychotic, and other related diagnosis. Ziprasidone (ZIH praise ih dohn) for example, has possible risks including Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, affect on glucose or sugar level, affects blood pressure levels, and promotes involuntary movement disorder.

Now anyone that knows depression and learning disabilities should be wise to avoid risking or promoting such complications. The listed risks are often direct links to the central nervous system, and most people with depression and learning disabilities need to avoid any areas, including medicines that affect the nervous system.

Is Depression a Real Disease Or Just a State Of Mind?

Depression is a serious malfunction of transmitters in the brain that control our emotions. Dopamine and serotonin are the leading cause of this mental illness. When these two chemicals are out of check then serious effects are noted in the persons mental state.

Serotonin and dopamine are our wake and sleep alarm clock for the body. With their release, they control our wake-sleep cycle, our pleasure senses, mood and motor functions.

They work on the cellular level and work in the nerve junction synapse(the small space between the nerve cells). There are many chemicals that work at this area but these two are believed to be the main reason for this debilitating illness that is not cured in 1-2 weeks. It sometimes takes months before the medication is effective in the mental state. It is thought to be in lack of one and too much of the other. Too much serotonin can lead the body to want to sleep all the time. Dopamine controls the motor functions of the body and the shakes that follow depression is conjuncted with this chemical. As in the disease Parkinson's, where the body shakes uncontrollably, dopamine is believed to be lacking in the receptor sites. That is why it is given orally to these patients. To try to level out these low, unbalanced transmitters.

Now that depression has a foundation for the cause, it can be treated with mostly success. Therapy is also required to help the individual become more rational thinkers and how to handle situations more productively. Having a rational head on your shoulders is a great asset and things don't seem to be as bleak and out of control.

Recognizing the condition is of up most importance. Leaving these at a unchecked imbalance has malfunctioning effects. Some of the symptoms for depression are: no energy, no appetite or too much appetite, no entrust in any of the usual activities, in a sad state of mind, crying without real reason and no interest in the significant other and the guilt of that feeling is overwhelming. Other people will notice that there is something wrong with the normal personality and will begin to ask if there is anything wrong with the person's health. These are only a few of the symptoms that can follow depression.

Depression is a long term disease and must be treated as such. There are no quick cures. It usually takes years for the person to completely recover and then it is usually a life altering condition. People with this disease are different than they where before it hit them. Their personality are totally changed and their demeanor is altered.

However, with medications these symptoms can be relieved to a degree of equality and continued therapy can help balance the imbalance in the transmitters in the brain.

Handling a Depressed Person

The person who is suffering from depression, also effects the surroundings, and everyone who comes in contact do feel an impact. Therefore it becomes very important and necessary to help the person to come out of the problem, thus making the journey of life easy and meaningful. There are three main steps which come in the way to improve the state of depressed person.

Recognizing the problem

The very first step to help any way to a sick person is to recognize the root cause of the problem. Though it is not easy, but still it is far much easier to find the problem as compared to the person concerned. Sometimes it is very difficult for the patient to actually know what had happened to him. If one notice a marked and lack of enthusiasm, negative thinking, disturbed sleep and eating pattern, perhaps an increase in alcohol consumption and loss of libido, then one should consider depression as the cause.

Understanding the Problem

It is very important that one has to understand the problem as lot of the anguish surrounding the disease is caused by frustration engendered by misunderstanding. Yes, there is a fact related to depressed person who is not responding, and whose behavior is strange and erratic and refusing to seek help is very daunting and struggle full.

There are a few very important facts one need to recognize if one is dealing with a depressed person:

- Depressed people are more dangerous to themselves then to their surroundings.
- One should be aware that teenagers and children can also experience depression.
- Depression is an illness like cancer or heart disease, there should be no shame or blame attached to being depressed.
- The depressed people cannot take in what the other person say or react usefully to help and advice in the way they normally would.
- The depression sufferer cannot cheer themselves up more nor do they snap out of it.
- One should always be aware that there are very successful treatments for alleviating the symptoms of depression and now with EPA they don't involve side effects.
- One should actually work toward the root cause of the problem to save depressant from the subsequent impact on relationship, both at home and at work as if the depression goes unrecognized it can be devastating.

Treatment

The best solution to any problem is to recognize the problem then finding the solution and finally helping the facts and solutions to improve the state of person who is suffering from the phase of depression. As the person who is feeling depressed will take very long to even admit the fact that is actually suffering from the disease. They may not response at once, but keep trying, or get someone else close to them and let them know how they are feeling and that they have your full support.

The most difficult task is to recognize the depression in children and teenagers, not at least because you don't expect them to get the illness so young. But one needs to be very careful to actually find the difference between a sulky mono syllabic teenager who refuses to eat what you cook or get out of bed or function in a way that you consider appropriate. If you think someone you know is in danger of harming themselves, you must seek help immediately by contacting their practitioner and explaining the problem. Thus making life seems more relaxed and beautiful to them.

What Are The Chances That Chronic Depression Leads To Schizophrenia?

Chronic depression is one type of depression that lasts for years and tends to recur after some time. Some call it "being in and out of depression". It usually starts as a mild case of depression where feelings of sadness are very minimal. The symptoms become more severe after some time, though, and that's when one realizes that he or she has been in a state of depression for a while.

Risk Factors

Chronic depression can happen to anyone, but some people appear to have a greater or higher tendency of developing it:

  • Women, possibly due to hormonal changes

  • Victims of child abuse

  • Sufferers of a chronic illness, such as cancer

  • Individuals with familial history of depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder

Although there is yet a more severe form of depression, the chronic type of depression needs to be dealt with accordingly. The consequences or symptoms of this form of depression can be threatening to your physical, emotional, and mental health. Specifically, depression of this nature can cause or manifest in the following symptoms:

  • Sleeping disorders. Not being able to sleep well or oversleeping may occur with chronic depression.

  • Poor nutrition. Some individuals with depression may lose the interest to eat while others may resort to eating excessively. Not making wise food choices may also come with depression.

  • Low libido. Depression can make one lose interest on sex, too.

  • Low energy. Energy levels can dip so low when you are suffering from depression.

  • Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia

Perhaps, one of the worst things that can occur with chronic depression is schizophrenia. A form of mental disorder, schizophrenia is characterized by:

  • Hearing voices other people cannot hear

  • Paranoia

  • Hallucination or the inability to identify reality from things imagined

Chances of schizophrenia developing is very high to people who are not getting the right treatment, who refuse treatment, who stop getting treatment against doctor's advice, who smoke and who take illegal drugs like marijuana.

Preventing Chronic Depression

Well, prevention is always better than cure, is it not? Although there are risk factors for depression, there are preventive measures that reduce the likelihood of it happening. Here are a few of them:

  • Take vitamin supplements especially Vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C. Here are some reasons why:

  • Vitamin B1 or Thiamine converts glucose into useful energy.

  • Vitamin B3 more popularly known as Niacin detoxifies the body and helps boost body metabolism. Not having enough supply of this B vitamin can result to fatigue, physical and mental, and may result to schizophrenia.

  • Vitamin B5 otherwise known as Pantothenic Acid is necessary in hormone-production. Hormones as we all know affect our stress levels and cause a variety of physical and mental changes.

  • Vitamin B6 or Pyridoxine is a mood-regulator. It also strengthens the immune system.

  • Vitamin B9 or Folic Acid has an important role in the synthesis of DNA. Apparently it is recommended not only for pregnant women but also for everyone, with or without tendency to develop depression.

  • Vitamin B12 is Cobalamin. This B-vitamin is necessary in red blood cell formation and in the prevention of anemia. Untreated anemia can complicate into mood swings and mental disturbances.

  • Vitamin C in the form of Ascorbic Acid is needed to produce serotonin, the chemical in the brain that affects mood.

  • Eat right. Getting the right nourishment is necessary to be in the right state of mind. Avoid processed foods and all forms of toxins, if possible. Feast, instead, on raw vegetables, fruits, and fish. Foods that are high in B-vitamins and Omega-3 fatty acids are foods your brain needs the most.

  • Exercise. Make time to exercise daily. Exercise regulates mood and balances the levels of your stress hormones.

  • Avoid all forms of vices, especially smoking and substance abuse. Smoking and drug abuse affect oxygen levels in your brain, killing your brain cells.

With these preventive measures, you may be able to ward off chronic depression and/or keep it from progressing into schizophrenia.

Play Mind Tricks With Yourself to Lift Depression

Since depression is all about thoughts and feelings you can use your mind to your advantage and trick yourself out of depression. While the drugs available to tackle depression have improved over the years a third of all depressed people find that anti-depressants have little or no effect on their symptoms.

However there are other alternatives to try when it comes to helping lift depression. Behavioral therapy is now thought to be just as effective if not more so, when it comes to dealing and overcoming depression. While the symptoms of depression are felt physically by way of feeling down, sad, blue, you cry more easily and your emotions are up and down, the solution is quite simple and all in the mind.

By playing mind tricks on yourself and getting your mind to change its way of thinking, you can lift yourself right out of depression. This doesn't of course mean that if you have been depressed and have been prescribed medication that you should ignore the advice of your Doctor and stop taking medication, but it is something that you can try alongside.

The simple answer is tricking yourself into thinking more positive thoughts and feelings. For example there is usually a reason behind the depression. While this reason is not to be trivialized it can be overcome.

If your depression stems from being in debt for example and you can see no immediate way out of your situation then every time you think about your problem you feel worse. However think about it, sometimes throughout your day you may see the light and the depression lifts by way of something unexpected which grabs your attention. Even if this is only for a few brief seconds, for those seconds your mood lifts and suddenly the world doesn't seem like such a bad place after all.

For those brief seconds or minutes when your mind was distracted, while your problem was still there you put it to the back of your mind and let other thoughts and feelings take first place.

This is the key to tricking your mind, by consciously making it think other thoughts.

If you are severely depressed and nothing seems good in the world then visualization and imagination will do for now. This of course won't be easy at first, but with perseverance and a little optimism it will gradually change your pattern of thought. Visualize changes in your life for the better and see yourself as escaping from the symptoms of depression and being the person that you want to be.

Be attentive to your thoughts and feelings and when you realize you have let yourself drift back into your old ways, turn to your new thoughts again. The more detail you can visualize the more real it will seem and the easier it will be to break from your depression.

You might think that this is only escaping from your problem, because after all, the problem that caused the depression in the first place is still there. That's true, but while the problem is still there you are able to see it in a new light.

Once you have felt what it feels like to feel happy again you are then able to think not about your depression and how stuck you are but how you can deal with the problem. So play mind tricks with yourself, after your mind has been tricking you into depression for so long, its time to get your own back.

Depression Sucks the Life Out of You

Is depression one of the worst plagues of our time? I think so. We are used to hearing about the Black, or Bubonic plague. Back in their time plague songs were used to warn people of the stages to expect. The old English plague song Ring a Ring of Roses is one of those songs. "Ring a ring of roses"...this describes the ring of red blotches that was your first sign that you were infected. "A pocket full of posies". This refers to the posies of herbs that were thought to help or cure the plague. "A tishoo, a tishoo," referring to the bout of sneezing that would come and the last line, "we all fall down", which needs no explanation. I rented a plague cottage in England once and the old apothecary cupboard was still on the wall as a reminder of how the plague victims hoped for the miracle cure from herbs and plants. Sometimes a plague that started with a flea infestation in damp cloth would kill so many residents of a town or village that the "life" of that place was never the same.

Today, we don't have official songs to warn us of the symptoms of the plague of depression, although if you consider the titles of many songs from the last one hundred years, you can see that many allude to depression. You can probably have fun thinking of some. Depression isn't funny though.

Millions of people struggle to find enough energy to do simple tasks such as showering, brushing their teeth or preparing food to eat because they are depressed. One of the main symptoms of depression is severe lack of energy. Many people are labeled lazy or lacking in motivation when they are really depressed. Clinical depression also robs a person of the enjoyment of things they used to love to do. Life feels grey and flat and a sufferer can either sleep too little or sleep too much...often fifteen hours a day. Some depressed people lose weight, some gain weight. Children can suffer with depression, often showing no desire to go to school or play with friends. Many times an element of shame is present. Perhaps the child feels shame about coming from a financially challenged or dysfunctional family. Perhaps the child is being bullied at school. Often the child has not had enough life experience to properly articulate why they are depressed and professional help will need to be sought.

There are several types of depression and medications to help. What works for one person may not for another. Many family physicians treat depression with the lowest dose of an anti depressant, which leaves the patient frustrated and even more depressed as the medication doesn't seem to be working. If the patient sees a psychiatrist, the medication will most likely be titrated to a much higher dose. Add cognitive therapy to the medication and WOW! You will see improvement.

Some people feel depressed because of a situation such as losing a loved one or a job. Time usually heals this kind of depression. Depression is not the same as "the blues". We all feel the blues from time to time but if it lasts longer than a week and we begin to spiral down into the symptoms mentioned, then, we need to seek help. Often a person is so weak and tired that they will need an understanding friend to get them to the doctor or therapist's office for help. Don't be ashamed if you need that. Depression is a physical as well as a mental illness and it is a real illness. You are not lazy or useless because you feel so depleted. You are ill.

Unfortunately, some people do not respond to medication or cognitive therapy and other kinds of treatment have to be considered. Sufferers of depression will tell how they have tried so many medications before finding the right one for them. If they had been on higher doses sooner, perhaps they would have found the right medication sooner too. It is never wise to change the dosage of a medication without first checking with your doctor, though. Most anti depressants will take three weeks to "kick in" and so don't be discouraged if you don't feel better right away. Some suicides may have been avoided if just a little more time on the right medication had occurred.

If you have a chemical imbalance in your brain that is causing your depression, it needs to be addressed. Beware of all the well intentioned but simplistic advice from others who do not suffer with depression. "Look on the bright side" is a good maxim. However, if you are severely depressed, you may know there is a bright side but you can not feel it in your soul. You can not just "pull your self together" any more than a diabetic can just pull himself together without the use of insulin. You know you have things in your life that are good, such as family and friends, but it just doesn't register in the way that it normally would, if you were not depressed.

Don't spend a minute longer in the dark grip of depression. This world is a beautiful place and you deserve to enjoy it. Get help now, even if you have to crawl to the phone to take the first step. There is hope. You can recover, even if you have been depressed for a long time.

Suicide and Depression - What to Look For and Treatment Options

Suicide is a word that most people speak in hushed tones, if they speak of it at all. There is an expression that if a person talks about suicide than they will not attempt it. People should not ignore anyone who mentions suicidal thoughts. Instead, the person who may be suicidal should be steered toward the help he or she desperately needs. A mental health professional is very capable of handling the situation.

Factors as to why a person has become suicidal can include clinical depression, drug or alcohol abuse, and a family history of depression/suicide. A person could also have someone that he or she cared about die by suicide (family/friend or celebrity) and that could trigger the thoughts. Suicide deaths are split up between the age groups.

Women are more likely to seek help for depression and suicidal thoughts whereas men are the ones who are more likely to commit suicide. There are uncertainties as to why this is. Men may be less likely to seek help from a professional before it is too late. Men are also the ones most likely to choose firearms to perform the task. Firearms are deadly no matter what. No one with a history of severe depression should have access to guns period.

Depression and suicide are thought to connect. Depression may not always lead to suicidal thoughts but the chance is always there. This is why it is imperative to get someone to a mental health professional when depression is noted. Many anti-depressants are on the market that will help a person to feel better. Unfortunately there can be many side effects. Through trial and error the doctor can find the one that works though.

Many of those who are depressed do not realize that they are. For this reason, it may be up to friends or family to take note and push an individual towards help. Notation should be made that depression is a treatable illness. This fact should be reiterated to patients so they understand this. Any medications need to be taken continuously as instructed by the doctor or a relapse can occur. Reading and researching has been found to be a great help to patients who suffer from suicidal thoughts as well as depression. Many good books can be found online or in the library.

If any of the following symptoms of depression are noticed, seek help as soon as humanly possible.

o A constant sadness
o No pleasure in anything
o Crying, feeling hopeless or constant negativity
o A decrease in energy levels
o Lack of concentration or ability to make decisions
o Sleep patterns that are disturbed (too much or too little sleep)
o Change in appetite and/or weight

Only a token few are listed. Every individual is different. This article was written as a guideline in what to look for and how to prevent depression and suicide.

Symptoms Of A Low Thyroid Function And Iodine/Selenium Deficiency

A low thyroid function has specific causes, yet the symptoms of this condition are numerous and can be mistaken for symptoms of other disorders, including psychological syndromes. Also, as an individual you might experience and describe your signs of a low thyroid in a unique way that can confuse the issue.

To add to this, a blood test may show that your thyroid hormones are low, but still considered in a normal range, not requiring drug therapy. If this is the case, while frustrating for you, you are lucky, because remedying a couple of simple nutritional deficiencies may return you to a true 'normal'. Review the following symptoms typically associated with a hypothyroid condition:

  • difficulty losing weight

  • tired all the time

  • moodiness

  • hair loss

  • loose skin

  • depression

  • aching muscles

  • feeling cold

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • lack of libido

  • sore joints

  • memory loss

  • difficulty concentrating

It is easy to see why this 'low normal' thyroid function can be difficult to figure out. If you are over forty, you may be told that your natural aging process has started. If your dominant symptom is depression, for example, you may be prescribed psychiatric drugs. These will for certain not help your thyroid hormones get up to par. And so on and so on with each symptom - a dominant symptom can be assigned to the wrong diagnosis.

Nutritional factors can be explored here. It is common knowledge that an iodine deficiency can be responsible for a sluggish thyroid gland. Yet, iodine is only part of the nutrition required to manufacture thyroid hormones. If you are deficient in other minerals like selenium, copper, and zinc, and the amino acid L-Tyrosine, just taking some iodine won't help to completely remedy the situation.

L-Tyrosine is an interesting amino acid. It is involved in the production of mood elevating neurotransmitters and adrenaline. If you are under constant stress, your L-Tyrosine will get used up producing adrenaline, and as a result will not be available in the quantity your body needs to produce your thyroid hormones.

One body system can function then, but another will be compromised. The good news is, that by introducing some simple supplements into your diet, you can target one area, such as your thyroid, and other aspects of your health will benefit as well.

Think of the chain reaction you can create by getting your thyroid up to normal. Imagine having more energy, healthier skin and hair, a healthy libido, and the sense of well being resulting from those few factors. You might feel more like working out and that can result in strong muscles, more fat burning, and slower aging.

Thyroid function affects your heart health, your cholesterol levels and your homocysteine levels. Also, extremely important, this in turn improves the lining of your blood vessels and prevents blood clots.

The content of selenium in our foods depends on the soil the foods grow in. This is very inconsistent from one agricultural area to another. Even if we know the selenium endowed areas of the world, our foods are not all tagged with their origins. It is the same with iodine. It is low in most diets, though traces are found in seafoods. Sadly our seafoods are so polluted now that we cannot eat them every day.

Overcome Depression - Manage Increased Appetite Caused By Anti Depressant Medication

Depression is one of the major mental health problems in the world. Treatment, therapy and medication for it are at an all time high. Anti-depressants are now more widely used than ever. These medical drugs are usually prescribed by medical professionals to relieve the usual symptoms of depression such as prolonged feelings of helplessness, gloominess, apathy, and decreased energy. While effective at first, remember that these are usually not long-term solutions. Unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects could sometimes come along with prolonged use of anti-depressants. One should learn the risks that come along with taking these drugs.

One of the main reasons why people stop continuing their treatment is the nasty side-effects that come along with anti-depressants. Some side-effects last only for a short time, just a few weeks or so; while some effects may not go away. Anti-depressants have a whole slew of bad side-effects like nausea, fatigue, insomnia, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, blurred vision, anxiety, and constipation. This article focuses on a hated side effect of anti-depressants: increased appetite.

Certain anti-depressant drugs like Buproprion (Wellbutrin) and SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are known to increase appetite. These chemicals will cause a lot of people taking these drugs to gain a whole lot of weight, which may further decrease the effectiveness of their treatment. To offset this side-effect, patients are advised to exercise at least an hour a day, and to eat healthy food. Cutting back on sugar and other sweet foods is also strongly advised.

There has been some speculative research that anti-depressants may not be as effective as they are advertised. SSRIs, the most prescribed anti-depressant drug, has recently come under fire for reportedly having very dangerous side-effects. They may decrease bone mass in older adults and have serious withdrawal symptoms.

In the end, one should be able to weigh the risks of these side-effects against the benefits of the cure and treatment of the disease that they are supposed to be treating. Side-effects are only one problem. Exercise On An Elliptical Trainer To Improve Your Mood

Even the most optimistic people have gone through times when they did not view their life in a positive light. Some people struggle with a depressed mood on a regular basis, while most will become more anxious and depressed in response to a negative event, such as prolonged unemployment, a divorce, or the death of a loved one. The medical profession has a number of drugs they can prescribe, but all drugs have side effects and may not be that effective at treating the problem. Exercise is an option that can enhance mood that offers other positive effects for your overall health. An elliptical trainer has the features that make it an ideal fitness machine to improve your mood.

Research on anxiety, depression and exercise shows that the psychological and physical benefits of exercise can also help reduce anxiety and improve mood. And after you feel better, continuing to exercise may keep anxiety and depression from coming back.

Duke University conducted a randomized controlled trial in 1999 that concluded that depressed adults who participated in an aerobic exercise program improved as much as those treated with sertraline, the drug Pfizer marketed as Zoloft.

Phillip Holmes, a neuroscience professor at the University, has shown that several weeks of exercise can switch on certain genes that increase the brain's level of galanin, a peptide neurotransmitter that appears to tone down the body's stress response by regulating another brain chemical, norepinephrine. This causes the brain to show less stress in response to new stimuli.

Exercise releases endorphins, which are feel-good chemicals that aid with the symptoms of depression. There are more of these chemicals released as you increase the intensity of the workout, which is why it may take less time exercising to improve your mood when you do more vigorous activities. An elliptical trainer can give you the type of vigorous workout you need to be most effective at combating anxiety and depression. As your fitness improves, you can really amp up the intensity of an elliptical workout by increasing resistance, incline, or strides per minute. The elliptical workout is also effective at changing your body composition, increasing lean body mass and reducing fat, and that can have a positive effect on self esteem.

Exercise can be effective way to enhance mood and combat anxiety and depression. A new or used elliptical trainer is a great way to get the exercise you need to look and feel you best.

Are You Clinically Depressed? Or Your Thyroid Putting You Out Of Sync?

You never really know, do you? Symptoms of depression are almost the same as those of your thyroid acting abnormally. You lose interest in anything, and everything happening around you. You just want to withdraw into yourself, not bother about the world around you. We've all been there, haven't we?

But how can you know if you're going to jump back to normal one of these days? You might be thinking one fine day you'll just snap out of it, but what's the guarantee of that happening anytime soon? Instead of pining away, wallowing in your misery, try to find if this phase is temporary, or do you need extra help to get out of it.

The first thing you need to do is ask yourself what is depressing you so much - anything related to relationships, work, family, etc.

If you can find what is troubling you, maybe you can speak to your spouse, partner, or friend to help you troubleshoot your issues.

If you can't seem to find anything particularly wrong with your life, then maybe it's just a little break you need. Pack up your bags right now, and go explore a new place - New York, Paris, even that quaint little hill station on the outskirts of your town is beckoning you.

Once you get back home from your little vacation, and settle back into your old routine, re-ponder on your state. Are you still feeling depressed? Or you don't even remember the last time you felt anything less than ecstatic?

If you're still going through bouts of depression, consider consulting with a physician. Most probably you'll have to take some blood tests to confirm your thyroid and hormone levels are working fine. If not, you'll be prescribed the right medications to help you correct whatever is physiologically wrong with your body.

Now keep in mind that your treatment might take a while. You might not have a miraculous recovery overnight, maybe not even for a few weeks. But with proper medication, you're bound to break out of your self-imposed isolation. At this stage, it's important to have your spouse, partner, family, or friends to support you emotionally. At least one person should be your pain buddy, with whom you can share your thoughts and feelings.

Don't worry! The road to happiness and satisfaction might be long, but it's definitely not impossible. Start right away to get out of depression.

Obtain Disability Tax Credits for Depression

Inability to perform one's own duties or to earn one's own living is called disability. Various types of disabilities fall under the main categories of physical disability and mental disability. Physical disability can occur due to accidents at work places, accidents caused during travel or due to sudden illness such as paralysis. Mental disability can occur due to sudden mental shocks and various diseases such as Alzheimer's disease that affect brain functioning.

Causes of disability can be classified as Perinatal (infections, premature infants, drugs during delivery and labor and oxygen deprivation), Prenatal (environmental causes such as alcohol, drugs, external agents, infections and maternal nutrition; maternal stress, Rh factor, genes, mother's age, maternal diseases and chromosomal) and childhood (childhood diseases, injuries, environmental causes and Rh factor). The known reasons for disabilities include environmental, socio cultural, constitutional, or biomedical factors.

Depression can be caused due to sudden death of a loved one, loss of job and divorce. People return to normal life after some days. If these conditions are prolonged, it may lead to clinical depression. The persons suffering from depression will not be able to perform their daily tasks. Clinical depression includes dysthymia, seasonal depression, major depression, and bipolar disorder.

Symptoms of depression include insomnia, loss of libido, suicidal thoughts, forgetfulness or loss of concentration, lack of stamina, weight loss, tiredness, lack of energy, reduction in appetite, irritability, tension and anxiety, low self esteem, helplessness and guilt, unresponsive to current events, tearfulness and low mood. People suffering from depression show low appetite towards food. Some persons, who suffer from depression, eat lot of food to get relief from stress. Such persons gain more weight. Eating disorder is one of the symptoms of depression.

Complications of major depression include substance abuse, suicidal behavior, and lower self-respect. It can lead to mental illness. Sleep disorders and weight fluctuations come under physical depression. Mental complications include suicidal behavior, lower self-respect, loneliness and self injury. Among these depression complications, suicidal behavior is the most dangerous one. It is serious form of self-injury and cannot be reversed. It is necessary to carefully identify persons suffering from depression and treat them.

People suffering from depression in Canada can approach Canadian Disability Corporation (CDC) to file for disability tax credits. The professionals at CDC examine the symptoms and reasons carefully and recommend for disability tax credits to the eligible persons. It helps persons suffering from depression to pay at least part of their treatment bills.

How to Help a Depressed Man

Let me ask you some things have you seen any woman who suffered from depression, in movies or in real life? How about men? Have you actually witnessed how a depressed man goes through such a state?

Depression is a sickness that affects both men and women. However, there are more women who are diagnosed with depression. Why? It's because a depressed man will most likely keep whatever his having to himself. He wouldn't verbalize sadness, or cry out his emotions like how women do it. Basically, depression in men is a little different from women's case. Although there are several common symptoms between men and women, here are symptoms that are more likely to happen in men with depression:

  • A depressed guy will continuously blame others for everything that have gone wrong, opposite with how depressed women reacts who blame themselves.

  • Men who are depressed also become more irritable and egoistic. You will notice that this guy will almost always be angry at other people and that they care much more on their status and ego.

  • Unlike women, a depressed guy will usually create conflict. They would try to provoke other people or they themselves would start a fight.

  • These men also always feel ashamed, in their performance in sex as a typical example.

  • Because these men are having inflated ego, they are very scared to have any failures. They are much focused on how to achieve more even to the expense of forgetting about themselves or their relationships.

  • A depressed guy will most likely abuse alcohol. Women usually try to eat their depression away, while men will resort to alcohol.

  • They also probably become control freaks, and they become very compulsive.

So, how could you help a depressed man get over this ordeal? Just like how there are differences between symptoms of depression in men and women, there are also slight differences between ways on how to help them. Before anything else, you must be aware that men are harder to persuade in getting help. It is even more difficult for them to admit that they have a problem. Nevertheless, here are some things you could do to help him:

  • First of all, help him admit his problem. Do not push him however. Just explain to him what you are observing slowly and what your concerns are. Ranting him about all his behaviors won't help.

  • Encourage him to go to the doctor. Explain to him in a good manner why he needs to go and what he would get after.

  • Do not give up on that person. A depressed person will ignore your efforts and make you feel unappreciated but little acts of kindness are really good for the person's being. Being there for him also shows that he has social support which are very vital in state of depression.

  • Provide him with healthy diet. Avoid stocking unhealthy foods in your fridge or cabinet because a depressed guy will try to eat them as much as possible and not the healthy ones.

  • Encourage him to take supplements such as vitamin supplements and homeopathic remedies. Taking vitamins will help his body systems heal and become more able in fighting depression. Homeopathy, which uses natural herbs like St. John's wort and Passion flower, will support emotional health and well being and promote a healthier attitude.

So there you have it. Symptoms and how you could help a depressed guy have been given. Remember, taking action will help save that important man in your life.

Fish Oil and Depression - How it Can Help

Not many people seem to know it but it has been found through many research and clinical studies that there is a strong connection between fish oil and depression. This finding was first observed by scientists who observed how countries with high daily fish consumption experienced the lowest depression rates.

In the same way, it was noticed that mothers resident of England who ate little fish during pregnancy had twice as much risk in developing post-partum depression compared to those who had regular intakes of fish. Since then, a handful of clinical studies were conducted which all agree that omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils can help in smoothing out mood swings and relieving depression. It was further found that omega 3 in fatty acids can increase the level of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter, in the brain. This is where the connection exists between omega 3 fish oil and depression.

The connection between fish oil and depression

Omega 3 fatty acids are actually polyunsaturated fats which cannot be produced by the body; they have to be taken in from food where they are derived mainly from seafood, especially fish. The two most important omega 3 fatty acids are DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

These fatty acids can be found in the cell-membranes and in the brain, and they play an important role in nervous system functioning, especially that of the nerve cells (the neurons). They play a critical role in the growth and the maintenance of brain cells. It has been also found in many research studies that increasing omega 3 levels makes it easy for serotonin to pass through the cell membranes. In fact, it has been found that it has the same effect on the brain as antidepressant medications such as Prozac in raising the levels of this critical neurotransmitter.

DHA and EPA

DHA and EPA in fish oils help promote a general feeling of wellness, thereby elevating moods and smoothing out mood swings. Studies also prove that omega-3 can help improve symptoms of depression including sleeping problems, anxiety, decreased sexual desire, sadness, and even suicidal tendencies. Aside from its effect in your psyche, it provide you with more health benefits - from regulating blood pressure and relieving inflammation to promoting healthy weight loss.

Where to get fish oil for depression

As mentioned earlier, omega 3 fish oils can be derived from seafood. However, important essential fatty acids EPA and DHA are only found in fish. Make sure you eat sufficient amounts of fish such as mackerel and tuna in your diet. If you want to be even sure that you are taking enough amounts to reap health benefits, take some good quality fish oil supplements every day.

On the other hand, if you are suffering from serious depression that it impedes your normal mode of thinking, you should seek help from a doctor or an experienced medical practitioner. Although fish oils and supplements may be advised, you will need more intensive measures to cure your depression. Remember that supplements should not be regarded as a substitute for proper medical care.

SAD: How to Fight Seasonal Depression

Have you ever wondered why our hearts go to our sweet hearts, we tend to miss them very intensely when it rains, we feel low, even feel like weeping alone on a cloudy day...we sometimes go through sudden mood change with no exact reason behind, we tend to eat more and sleep more and experience depression, lethargy, fatigue, cravings for sweets and starches, headaches, sleep problems and irritability as the temperature drops. The influence of season on human mood and his energy level is undeniable, and time and again the psychologists have studied and documented the facts.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is not only a couple of symptoms related to winter blah; it is mostly associated with day light, that is why SAD is prevalent in high latitude and mid latitude areas. People who live in the Arctic region are more susceptible due to the fact that they are affected by polar nights, prolonged periods of overcast weather also induce SAD, however, It is more serious disorder, sometimes requiring hospitalization when the depression is aggravated and turns into dysthymia or clinical depression. Our biological internal clocks or circadian rhythm goes through a shift as seasons change, and our biological clocks fall out of our daily schedules. January and February are the months when a SAD sufferer suffers the most, young people and women are comparatively more victimized.

The most frequent symptoms are recurring symptoms of depression and excessive eating and sleeping, weight gain during the fall or winter months. The patient would fully cutback from depression in the spring and summer months. SAD symptoms occur in them with no non-seasonal depression episodes and seasonal episodes significantly outnumber non-seasonal depression episodes. The patient craves for sugary and starchy foods during the winter. Possible cause of the disorder, as the researchers and psychologists say, is Melatonin, a sleep-related hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. This hormone is said to cause symptoms of depression, because it is produced at increased levels in the dark. Therefore, when the days are shorter and darker the production of this hormone increases and people are affected.

Apart from antidepressants like Xanax, photo therapy or bright light therapy is proved to suppress the brain's secretion of melatonin. The use of bright light box at a dose of 10,000 lux for 30-60 minutes per day has given good results. During these minutes the eyes should remain open but should not stare directly to the light. The light box is a bank of white fluorescent lights on a metal reflector and shield with a plastic screen. The light therapy may take several weeks to treat the depression but some patients have shown results within one week. For patients with mild symptoms, spending time in the sun or arranging picnics or outdoors to receive more sunlight may be helpful. A daily walk of an hour in the sunlight during the winter is more effective than two and a half hours of light therapy. When photo therapy does not work, an antidepressant drug proves to be effective in reducing or eliminating SAD symptoms. But before taking an antidepressant, a doctor's advice is required so that a proper antidepressant medication is taken.

There is no cure for SAD discovered yet; nevertheless, the above mentioned treatments are helpful in managing the winter blues so that one can go though all the seasons in the year comfortably.

5 Ways To Help A Depressed Loved One

When a person is suffering the torment of a stressful, depressive or anxious episode, it can be so hard for loved ones and friends to connect with them. For the sufferer, the torment can be exacerbated because no one understands what they're going through.

Here's 5 ways you can develop understanding so you can reach a loved one.

1. A common reaction to a sufferer is: "Oh, come on, you'll be OK, it's all in the mind." Although stress, depression and anxiety have their roots in thought, there are many other symptoms involved. Severe headache, back pain, muscle pain, exhaustion, palpitations, hypertension, shaking, loss of appetite, loss of sex drive and loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities to name several. There are many other symptoms and it's also important to understand that no sufferer experiences the same symptoms. E.g. One may develop severe back pain another may develop headaches. As you can see, it is much more complicated than "all in the mind".

2. Another reaction is to say "What have you got to be so worried about? Many people throughout the world have it much worse than you do and they're happy." Now fair enough, when you look at the plight millions of people have to endure around the world, living in squalor and poverty, then yes, they do have a terrible time. So do people who suffer severe illness and disability. But this just won't have any bearing on how a sufferer feels at all. In my own case, when people said this to me it meant nothing because I couldn't change their circumstances and I was struggling to solve my own problems. I couldn't care about anyone else. This is a symptom of depression. A sufferer will turn inwards and disconnect from society. They need help to solve their problems. Pointing out that others have it worse will not help in any way.

3. Non sufferers find it very hard to accept depression, anxiety and stress as real problems. Many will say "Oh, you've just got the blues. Don't worry, they'll soon go away." Of course, there will be times in all of our lives when things don't run smoothly, when things go awry, when the weather is awful, when friends let you down, when you just feel a bit sad. We call these "the blues" and we know that the blues will eventually lift. There is a big difference between "the blues" and stressful, depressive or anxious episodes. Sufferers firmly believe their torment will never end and they cannot see a positive outcome to any problem. Add these feelings to the physical symptoms and you can see that "the blues" is vastly different.

4. Self-deprecation is typical of these problems. Sufferers will put themselves down at every opportunity. They'll do it when they're alone and they'll do it when they're in the company of others. E.g. "No, you go ahead. I won't bother because I'll just get it wrong like everything else I do." When you hear this, avoid the urge to challenge it or reprimand. Instead, gently and subtly remind them of a time when something went well. Just say "Hey, do you remember that time when you..." Challenging or reprimanding will only arouse resentment and they'll just think you're against them. This is a very subtle way of reminding the sufferer of a more positive event.

5. Frustration is also common amongst people who cannot understand what their loved one is going through. And it can soon give way to anger and resentment as patience wears thin. Criticism begins. "You've always been negative. The glass is always half empty with you. All you've ever done is look on the downside. You want to stop feeling sorry for yourself and pull yourself together." Whilst I can understand the frustration, this kind of approach will only have 2 outcomes: Your loved one will resent you so much they will start avoiding you and their torment will deepen. As frustrating as it is, please resist this. Give them space. Reassure them you're there for them no matter what. If your frustration is getting the better of you, take a time out to gather your thoughts by going for a walk. Yes it's hard but the alternative is to make things harder.

I know it's so difficult to reach loved ones and I know it's so hard to understand what's happening. This article will help you and your loved one to deal more effectively with the torment.

Until next time.
